DESCRIPTION:
EPW - J. Arnold, London, verge fusee doctor's watch with center seconds and hacking function, 57mm, gilt OF pair cases, inner marked with casemaker's incuse "V D" marking, white enamel dial with upper timekeeping register, hacking slide outside dial at 10-seconds, center sweep-seconds with hand sharply arched for clearance above setting arbor, KWKS, verge escapement, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock having classical bust at its neck, armor helmet to its upper portion, originally with gilt locking dust-cap which is no longer present, s#212. An attractive and nicely finished center-seconds fusee, it is unclear whether the signature of this watch is indeed for the John Arnold of chronometry fame or if it is for another individual with same first initial and surname. If this piece was by the renowned John Arnold of chronometry fame, it would presumably date to the early portion of his career prior to his devotion to precision timekeeping. Selections from the collection of Tom McIntyre. Mr. McIntyre's website contains stories on many of the watches which can be found here: https://awco.org?collid=300
